Spared or Spoiled Reviews: Sleeping with Other People

The rules are simple. The good get spared. The bad get spoiled.

Sleeping with Other People is a cute movie. A romantic comedy with a couple of really big laughs and a very likable cast. This sweet little indie is about a pair of sex addicts who hook-up in college. And about the mess they make of their romantic lives after. It’s very sexy and very funny (at times). It’s a good little movie. And I love the cast. These are some of my favorite TV actors. But don’t expect a lot from it. It’s just a cute little modern romantic comedy. Or maybe it’s better to call it a modern sex comedy. Because it’s all about the sex. Seriously.

Verdict: SPARED

Alison Brie and Jason Sudeikis

“It’s not only about sex. We talk about other things.” “Name one other thing.”

Sleeping with Other People reminded me a little of Amy Schumer’s Trainwreck. Like that extremely funny movie, it handles the subject of sex in a refreshingly modern way. And there is a lot of sex in this. And there’s a lot of sex talk in this. It is the central subject of the movie. The two main characters are admitted sex addicts. The lovely Alison Brie and Jason Sudeikis destroy their romantic relationships with their addictions.

“This isn’t sexy. This is just how I dress around the house.”

Alison Brie is smoking hot in this. I’m a big fan of hers. She’s very funny and she’s very pretty. Some might say too hot for comedy but I am not one of those people.

Jason Sudeikis in Sleeping with Other People

“Oh my god. This movie is just about sex.” “You’re damn right it is.”

Jason Sudeikis as a leading man is a bit of a stretch for me. He’s extremely likable but he has this quirky quality that I feel is more suitable for the best friend or even the villain. But that’s just my opinion. He’s very hot too. But he’s no Ryan Reynolds or Bradley Cooper.

“See. Look at this. We look silly here. We can be wacky in a non-sexual way. This isn’t sexy at all.” “You know this is foreplay right?”

Sleeping with Other People deftly avoids being raunchy. This is a cute movie. Sex forward without being exploitative. As with all romantic comedies, the characters lives, their jobs, apartments, what-have-you, are all beyond amazing. And completely unbelievable. The wacky romance plots are always more acceptable than the perfect lives these people have otherwise. That’s the real fantasy folks. That’s what their really selling. Let’s get real with our romantic comedies people. Nobody lives like that.

“And here we’re just eating ice cream on the couch. Nothing even mildly suggestive. ” “Yeah. This doesn’t turn me on at all. Keep doing that with your feet.”

Sleeping with Other People is a funny, sexy comedy romance. Well-written and directed with a fun and sexy cast of comedic actors who talk about and have a lot of sex without the film feeling raunchy. I mean, there’s a juice bottle in this movie that gets a lot of action and it’s not dirty. It’s actually very cute and very sexy.

“See. I just have my finger in this bottle it’s not… okay this is very sexy.” “You’re damn right it is.”

I was surprised by how much I liked this movie. The writer and director, Leslye Headland, does a fantastic job. For its genre and budget, Sleeping with Other People is pretty damn good. I recommend it.
